Cordless stick vacuums: run time and the head matter more than suction
How to size run time to your floors, which cleaning head fits your mix of carpet and hard floor, and the bin and filter details that decide whether you keep using it.
A cordless stick vacuum lives or dies by whether it's convenient enough to grab for a two-minute job. That's about weight, run time and emptying — not peak suction numbers.
Run time
Ratings are measured on the lowest setting with no motorised head. Real cleaning on a carpet head at a mid setting runs 15–25 minutes on most mid-range models. Map that to your floor plan: one floor of a typical house per charge is the practical target. A swappable battery doubles it and keeps the vacuum alive when the first pack ages.
The head
- Soft roller (fluffy): best on hard floors, picks up fine dust and large debris together; useless on carpet.
- Brush roll with stiff bristles: carpet. Hair wraps unless the roller is designed to shed it; "anti-tangle" combs on the roller are real and worth having.
- Combination heads that switch automatically are good enough for most homes with a mix; dedicated-head models with two heads in the box are better if you have a lot of both.
- Check the head's edge cleaning and whether it lies flat enough to go under furniture.
What to check
- Weight in hand, with the battery, and where the motor sits. Top-heavy designs tire your wrist on ceilings and stairs; bottom-heavy ones are easier.
- Bin emptying: a one-handed hinge that empties straight into a bag is the difference between a vacuum that's used and one that's dreaded.
- Filtration: a washable HEPA-class filter at the exhaust, and a rinse schedule you'll keep. Sealed systems matter for allergy households.
- Wall dock vs. free-standing — a dock with a charger and tool holders is the feature that gets it used.
- Parts availability: batteries, filters and rollers for sale separately from the maker.
Ignore, mostly
- Air watts and Pa numbers between brands.
- Laser dust illumination as a buying reason; it's fun, not functional.
- Screens that show particle counts.
Timing
The big brands refresh annually in spring; previous-year flagships bottom out around the November sales and often beat the new mid-range at the same price.
