Exercise bikes: upright, recumbent or spin — pick the posture, then the resistance

Which style fits the rider, why magnetic resistance beats friction, what flywheel weight actually does, and the fit adjustments that decide whether it gets used.

Three kinds of bike, three kinds of rider. Decide the posture first; it's the thing you can't change later.

Posture

Resistance

Magnetic resistance is silent, wears nothing and adjusts precisely; it's the right answer at any price now. Friction (felt pad on the flywheel) is cheaper, noisier and needs replacement pads. Air resistance (fan bikes) scales with effort and is a different, harder workout.

Flywheel

Heavier flywheels (30–40 lb on spin bikes) smooth the pedal stroke; on magnetic bikes the gearing matters as much as the mass, so a lighter flywheel with a good drive can feel just as smooth. Don't buy on flywheel weight alone.
