Buying a mattress online: firmness, materials, and the trial period
How to pick a type without lying on it first, what the trial really covers, and which add-ons to skip.
Online mattress buying works because of the trial period, not the reviews. Decide on type and firmness, then let the trial settle the rest.
Type
- Memory foam: contouring, motion isolation, sleeps warmer unless it has cooling layers. Good for side sleepers and couples.
- Hybrid (coils + foam): more bounce, better edge support, cooler. The default choice for most people.
- Innerspring: firm, bouncy, cheapest. Less pressure relief.
- Latex: responsive, durable, cool, pricey. Often the choice for people who dislike the "sinking" feel of foam.
Firmness
Side sleepers usually want medium-soft to medium; back sleepers medium to medium-firm; stomach sleepers firm. Heavier bodies should go one step firmer than the chart says. "Medium" from one brand is not "medium" from another — read the brand's own scale.
The trial
Look for at least 100 nights, free returns, and no restocking fee. Check who pays return pickup and whether the mattress must be donated or collected. Many brands require 30 nights before a return so the foam breaks in — plan around that.
Skip, usually
- The matching foundation if your existing base is a solid platform or slats under 3 inches apart.
- Mattress protectors sold at checkout — buy a basic waterproof one anywhere.
- "Cooling" upgrades unless you already sleep hot.
Timing
Holiday weekends (Presidents' Day, Memorial Day, Labor Day, Black Friday) carry the deepest list-price discounts, but list prices are set with those discounts in mind. Compare the sale price across brands, not the discount percentage.
