Home security cameras: decide on power, storage and subscription before resolution
Wired vs battery, local vs cloud recording, what the monthly fee buys, and the placement details that decide whether the footage is usable.
Most camera regret is about the three things that aren't on the spec sheet: how it's powered, where the video is stored, and what the subscription costs over three years.
Power
- Wired (PoE or adapter): always on, continuous recording possible, no charging. Needs a cable run; best for permanent installs.
- Battery: install anywhere, record on motion only, recharge every few weeks to months depending on traffic and cold. Solar panels help in sunny spots.
- Doorbell cameras: existing doorbell wiring powers most; battery versions exist for homes without it.
Storage
- Local (microSD in the camera, or a base station / NVR with a drive): no fee, footage stays in your house, survives an internet outage. The base-station route is the sweet spot for several cameras.
- Cloud: easiest, works from anywhere, but the useful features — longer history, person/package detection, rich alerts — usually sit behind the subscription. Price the plan per camera or per home over three years before comparing hardware.
What to check
- Field of view and placement: 130–160° wide; mount 8–10 ft up, angled so faces are captured, not the tops of heads.
- Night vision: infrared is standard; colour night vision needs some ambient light.
- Resolution: 2K is the practical target; 4K files eat storage and bandwidth. A clear 2K image beats a compressed 4K one.
- Wi‑Fi strength at the mount point — the number-one cause of dropped clips. 2.4 GHz travels further; 5 GHz is faster near the router.
- Weather rating (IP65+) and operating temperature for your winters.
- Platform: works with the voice assistant and home app you already use; some brands lock features to their own ecosystem.
- Two-way audio and siren if you want to talk to the porch.
Privacy
Two-factor on the account, cameras pointed at your property not the neighbour's, and a brand with a clear policy on who can see footage. Indoor cameras with a physical shutter are worth the small premium.
