Soundbars: the connection and the subwoofer decide more than the channel count
HDMI eARC, whether you need a separate sub, and what 'Dolby Atmos' means at each price tier.
A soundbar is bought to fix TV speakers, and nearly any one does. The spread between models is about dialogue clarity, bass, and whether it connects without a nightly fight over inputs.
Connection
- HDMI eARC is the one to have: one cable, TV remote controls volume, and the bar receives the full-quality audio from everything plugged into the TV. Confirm the TV has an eARC (or at least ARC) port.
- Optical works everywhere but limits the formats and needs a second remote or IR learning.
- Extra HDMI inputs on the bar matter only if the TV runs out of ports.
Subwoofer
Bass is physics: a bar alone can't do it. Bars bundled with a wireless sub are the value sweet spot; "built-in subwoofer" bars are fine for a bedroom. If the bar is sold with an optional sub, price the pair before comparing.
Channels and Atmos
- 2.1 / 3.1: stereo plus a centre channel (the 3) and a sub (the .1). The centre channel is what makes dialogue clear; 3.1 is the practical minimum for movies.
- 5.1: adds rear speakers, wireless on most systems. Real surround, more boxes.
- Atmos: on expensive bars, upward-firing drivers bounce height effects off the ceiling and it works in rooms with flat ceilings under about ten feet. On cheap bars, "Atmos" is a decoder with no height drivers — it does nothing audible.
What to check
- Width vs. the TV stand, and height vs. the bottom of the screen (it must not block the IR sensor).
- Dialogue enhancement and night mode — the two settings everyone uses.
- Lip-sync adjustment if you'll use optical or Bluetooth.
- Wi‑Fi streaming (AirPlay, Chromecast, Spotify Connect) if it doubles as the music system.
Ignore, mostly
- Peak wattage.
- Channel counts above 5.1.2 unless the room and budget are serious.
- Brand-matching the TV; it buys a shared remote and little else.
