Wireless earbuds: fit first, then features
Fit decides sound, noise cancelling and whether they stay in. Decide the ecosystem, then pick the pair with the features you'll use daily.
Two pairs of earbuds with identical spec sheets can sound completely different in your ears, because the seal decides the bass, the isolation and how well noise cancelling works. Everything below assumes you'll try the tips.
Fit and tips
- Look for at least three tip sizes in the box, and ideally foam as well as silicone. Memory-foam tips from third parties fix a lot of "they fall out" problems.
- Stem designs sit lighter and are easier to grab; bud designs seal deeper and cancel more noise. Neither is better; it's your ear.
- If you'll run with them, check the water rating: IPX4 covers sweat and rain; IP67 survives a rinse under the tap.
Ecosystem
Earbuds from your phone maker get the features that don't show up on spec sheets: instant pairing, audio switching between devices, find-my, spatial audio. Third-party buds can be better value and better-sounding, but check whether the app with the equalizer and ANC controls exists on your platform.
What to check
- Noise cancelling vs. transparency: good transparency sounds like not wearing earbuds; that's the feature you'll use at the office and the checkout.
- Multipoint (laptop and phone at once).
- Call quality in wind โ the hard case for every pair; find reviews with recordings.
- Battery: 5โ8 hours per charge with ANC on is typical; the case adds three to five charges. Wireless charging of the case is a convenience, not a necessity.
- Latency if you game or watch a lot of video on Android; look for a low-latency mode.
- Single-bud use and ear detection for pausing.
Ignore, mostly
- Driver size in millimetres.
- Codec lists unless your phone supports the one named.
- "Hi-Res" badges on a Bluetooth product.
Timing
Flagship lines refresh every two to three years and the outgoing model drops sharply for a few months. Buy the outgoing pair unless the new one fixes something you care about (usually call quality or the case).
